1. Know how to write an introduction.

Students who are unable to write a solid paper have difficulty writing the introduction. Without a strong introduction with all of the necessary pieces. Introductions need to have a creative hook, a purposeful bridge, and a clear thesis. For many students the bridge is the challenge because it has to connect the hook and the thesis. Without a strong hook and a thesis that makes sense, it is difficult to connect them. You do not want to leave the reader wondering what is going on in the introduction.

2. Learn the different organizational styles.

There are several organizational styles that can be used and good writers know when to use them. Whether you use chronological, pro-con, spatial, or a block style, you should be sure the style adds to the paper. Without organization, the paper will not have a logical flow and the reader will be confused. Argumentative projects work well with pro-con or block styles, while expository papers and narrative papers need spatial or chronological organization.

A great writer has a consistent voice. This is done with sentence variety, word choice, and paragraph structure. After some writing practice, you will begin to notice the voice you use. Your voice should be evident regardless of the paper you write, whether it be narrative, informative, persuasive, or creative. Great writers have a confident voice in everything they write.

7. Write with tone.

This is challenging thing to do when writing a paper. In some cases, the piece you write should be free of tone (attitude) - especially if you are writing to inform. Otherwise, you can write with a positive or negative tone, or you can break those two down into more emotional tones based on the topic of the piece. In many cases, the tone of the paper is what makes it truly enjoyable to read.
